Major: Geosciences
Why did you choose your major?
I chose my major because geology as a whole has been a strong passion ever since I was a little kid. Mostly stemming from a natural propensity to Earth and its natural forces. More specifically, earthquakes and volcanoes.
Would you recommend it to a future student? Why?
I would absolutely recommend it to future students. Geology is a very niche and beyond interesting science and for me personally, is an escape from the rest of society at times to try and understand how our planet works. It can be challenging at times with the various course requirements, but in the end, it’s worth it for the overall experience. The geoscience community is also very open and welcoming, at Cal Lutheran, and outside of Cal Lutheran.
What are your future plans?
My plans are to go to grad school for Geophysics once I complete my Bachelor’s degree. A research position in real-time seismic, tsunami, or volcano monitoring, or science communication would be the most ideal career path for me at present.
Are there any particular experiences — in or out of the classroom — that have helped you identify that path?
Many experiences have helped shaped my career path. The biggest of which is the fact that I grew up in Southern California living with earthquakes on a consistent basis. Wanting to understand the hows and whys were and continues to be a driving force in my career. The uncertainty of what’s going to happen from day to day is another factor that draws my attention since each volcanic eruption, earthquake, or tsunami could be an opportunity to learn something.
My interest in Science Communication has recently become a big part of my career since I have started teaching earthquake science across Tik Tok and Instagram for almost 2 years now. Being thrust into the public eye with a large, consistent audience has given me thoughts that this is something I am rather good at and could use to my advantage going forward.
