Davis Sharts ’23

If a student wants to learn about more than just the cell and its structures, and truly understand the big picture, this major is the one for them. I have been able to learn more about the chemical processes that dictate our lives, and how important they are. Through my classroom experiences and research experience with Dr. Michael Abdelsayed, including his belief in me as a potential graduate student, I have developed a passion for going further into the life sciences.

Major: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Why did you choose your major?

I chose the biochemistry and molecular biology major at Cal Lutheran because of my interest in life at the chemical and molecular levels. I wanted to learn more about the chemical processes that dictate our lives, and how important these processes are. I also wanted to learn more about the proteins facilitating life by managing these chemical processes.

Would you recommend it to a future student? Why?

I would highly recommend the biochemistry and molecular biology major to any future student who wants to dive deeper into cellular life. If a student wants to learn about more than just the cell and its structures, and truly understand the big picture, this major is definitely the one for them.

What are your future plans?

I have applied to grad schools for doctorates in biochemistry. I have already been offered by Oregon State University into their Biochemistry and Biophysics doctoral program.

Are there any particular experiences — in or out of the classroom — that have helped you identify that path?

My experiences in the biochemistry and molecular biology major shaped my future goals. From my classroom experiences to my research experience with Dr. Abdelsayed and his belief in me as a potential grad student, I developed a passion to go further into the life sciences.
