Business Administration English

Patrick Lewis ’24

English can be a great stepping stone for many potential careers in law, education, writing, publishing, and more. I would also advise most people who are studying within non-business-related fields to at least pick up a business minor to diversify themselves as a job applicant.

Major: English

Minor: Business Administration

Why did you choose your major and minor?

I declared an English major because I wanted to teach English abroad and develop as a writer. I declared a business administration minor because I wanted to make myself a more marketable job-applicant. I also developed an entrepreneurial spirit as I was at Cal Lutheran and desired to know more about business operations.

Would you recommend them to a future student? Why?

I would recommend declaring an English major to the right student. If a person is unsure about where they want to take their career, English might not be the best place to start, but knowing where you want to go can make you stand out as you begin your career. It can be a great stepping stone for many potential careers in law, education, writing, publishing, and more. I would even suggest pairing it with other fields of study. The hard skills that you develop as an English major will carry over across many disciplines and career paths.

I would definitely recommend declaring a business administration minor. Honestly, I would advise most people studying within non-business-related fields to pick up a business minor. If I had the time, I would have also majored in business administration. It is a great way to diversify yourself as a job applicant, and it teaches you valuable lessons about managing and working within various organizations.

What are your future plans?

My current plan is to move to Japan and work as an assistant language teacher (ALT) for the JET Program for several years. After this, I plan on either going to law school or getting my master’s in business administration. I am the type of person who enjoys the mysteries of life, thus I do not have my whole career trajectory planned out, but I have an idea about where my journey will take me next.

Are there any particular experiences — in or out of the classroom — that have helped you identify that path?

It is hard to pinpoint an exact experience that has led me down my current path. Rather, the holistic experience of my college career slowly molded my path into something that I see as worth pursuing. The trials and tribulations of changing my major from biology, to psychology, and then to English, experimenting with my general education requirements, and developing genuine relationships with my professors, have all contributed to helping me identify my next few steps in life.
