Film and Television Undergraduate

Richard Perez ’26

I want to be able to tell my own stories and learn how to push them out into the world. This major is so much more than just learning what films are and how they are made. It has taught me to become more creative and think deeply about the stories I hear. Each film class I have taken so far is never the same structure, which makes my classes feel fresh and never dull.

Major: Film and Television

Why did you choose your major?

I chose film and television because I wanted to be able to tell my own stories and learn how to push them out into the world. I’ve always been interested in filmmaking and when it came time to pick what I wanted to study it was easy. One of the main reasons though to why I picked this major was because of my childhood, my dad would take me to the film festival in Santa Barbara almost every year when I was younger and would always show me movies that he loved. I was raised on comedies and 80’s movies and it just stuck with me.

Would you recommend it to a future student? Why?

I would most definitely recommend this major to a future student because it’s so much more than just learning what films are and how they are made. This major has helped me become more creative and think deeply about the stories I hear. I also just love how in every class I take it’s never the same thing, it really makes classes feel fresh and never dull. I also love the guest speakers that come I into my class because they are people who worked or a currently working in the industry. Also, just being able to use filming equipment without any hassle is an amazing thing.

What are your future plans?

My future plan is to get an internship in my junior and senior year of college. When I graduate I want to get job on the production side of filmmaking either with netflix,  HBO, or NBC.

Are there any particular experiences — in or out of the classroom — that have helped you identify that path?

One experience that has helped me identify this path is the guest speakers that come into my classes and talk about the film industry. They have helped me understand what steps I need to take and how to get to where I need to. Another experience was just getting to talk with upper classmen who have already gotten their foot in the door and just hearing how they like it and how they got their foot into the industry.
