Major: Biology
What activities were you involved in during your time at Cal Lutheran?
I had multiple internships throughout my undergrad: Amgen Clinical Supply Chain Intern, Atara Project Management Intern, Atara Translational Research Associate, and Atara Quality Control Associate.
Tell us about your internship- what did you do? Did you use services or connections available at Cal Lutheran to find it?
I was lucky enough to have a family friend that helped me apply to my initial Amgen internship, but I also submitted my resume to the Amgen representatives that were at the CLU internship fair in 2020. I spoke to them about my application and goals and used that event as an opportunity to network! Career Services were also invaluable in this as I constantly went to them for resumes, cover letters, and interview advice! For Atara, I applied on my own and they were impressed by my Amgen internship between my sophomore and junior year and my interview skills, which is how I got the position.
How did you turn your internship into a full-time job?
In January and February 2022, I started applying for full-time positions in preparation for my graduation in May 2022. My communication skills and previous internship experiences really helped me to get my full-time job at Amgen as a Site Supply Chain Senior Associate. The help I received and exposure at CLU allowed me to be successful in my resume and interviews to gain the experience required for this position! The connections I had made at Amgen and Atara over two years allowed me to utilize my network upon applying for a full-time job.
How did Cal Lutheran and/or your major prepare you for success in this position?
Again, the resources/services at Cal Lutheran helped me prepare better for interviews and prove to the hiring managers that I was capable of these positions. My major in biology and subsequently the courses I took at Cal Lutheran definitely prepared me for my current role in the best ways. STEM classes taught me all about time management and prioritization. Additionally, they provided an incredible foundation of knowledge that has been invaluable to my current role.
Amgen has plenty of market products that deal with inflammation, oncology, cardiology, and more. Understanding how these products work at a cellular/ biological level has been crucial in the transition to a full-time job. I am able to quickly understand how the products work within the patient’s body, and then I can fully focus on the requirements of my role.
If I hadn’t been prepped by my biology classes at Cal Lutheran, I’d probably have to spend a lot more time understanding how Amgen’s products work and why their important to the current market. Instead, I get to put more time and focus on serving patients every step of the way and in every way I can!
