Yanely Lara ’24

This major has a range of career options and will help with personal growth. I am interested in working within the juvenile justice system to make a positive impact on young lives and help them navigate their challenges. I have identified this path by taking courses such as Child and Adolescent Development (PSYC 304), volunteering my time at local schools and joining ride-alongs with the local sheriff’s department.

Major: Psychology with an emphasis on Law and Criminal Behavior

Why did you choose your major?

I chose my major because my high school AP psychology teacher, Mrs. Sebek, encouraged me by providing unwavering support, offering constructive feedback, and consistently believing in my abilities. Her motivating words and genuine interest in my progress boosted my confidence and inspired me to strive for excellence in this major.

Would you recommend them to a future student? Why?

I would recommend pursuing a psychology major because it offers a comprehensive understanding of human behavior which can be applied to everyday life. You will be able to improve your critical thinking skills and have the chance to positively influence individuals and society as a whole. This major has a range of career options and will help with personal growth. Plus, the psychology department has amazing faculty who dedicate their time to fostering an enriching learning environment.

What are your future plans?

I am currently exploring various career options and have not yet decided on my future job plans. However, an area of interest is working within the juvenile justice system. I am fascinated by the idea of making a positive impact on young lives and helping them navigate their challenges. This is a field where I believe I can contribute meaningfully and imply everything I have learned.

Are there any particular experiences — in or out of the classroom — that have helped you identify that path?

I have identified this path by taking courses that were the most interesting to me. Child and Adolescent Development (PSYC 304) with Dr. Jodie Kocur solidified my interest in wanting to work with children. I have also volunteered my time at local schools and even joined ride-along with the local sheriff’s department to discuss any questions I had.
