Multimedia was such an expansive and versatile major in the creative field. All the required courses for a multimedia major will train you in graphic design, motion graphics, storyboarding, web design, 2-D and 3-D animation, and video editing. Because art was in the same department as my multimedia major, a lot of the classes crossed over and it allowed me to incorporate traditional art into my digital art. I recommend an art minor to creative minds who are interested in taking on all the forms of media at once.

Major: Multimedia with an emphasis in Graphic Design and Print

Minor: Art

What is your current position/career?

Following graduation, I work as a Freelancer for smaller companies, for example, I do illustrations for an independent book company.

What motivated you to study your major at Cal Lutheran?

I chose multimedia because it was such an expansive and versatile major that will allow you to be in the creative field and specialize in a certain medium while also being well-versed in all other forms of media presentation.

How did Cal Lutheran and/or the multimedia program set you up for success in your position/career?

All the required courses for a multimedia major will train you in graphic design, motion graphics, storyboarding, web design, 2-D and 3-D animation, and video editing. Because my emphasis is in graphic design and print, I also learned the skills of typography, layout, and the technical skills of Adobe products.

What skills or proficiencies did you acquire at Cal Lutheran, through your studies or other activities, that you now use in your current position/career?

During my time at Cal Lutheran, I loved how personal the multimedia department is. You will come to know all the people within your major because you’ll be taking many classes with them. It allows you to make many close connections with your peers and your professors. Having such small classes creates an open and welcoming environment that will allow you to thrive and get the help you need. I developed a lot of my style taking Professor Barbara Miyuki Obermeier’s class, Brand Identity and Design and Typography.

What motivated you to choose your minor? Would you say that your minor is a good pairing with your  major?

In high school, I did many classes that covered core requirements, which allowed for more credits to be applied to a minor. Because art is in the same department as multimedia, a lot of the classes crossed over and it allowed me to pursue more classes involving traditional art in addition to the digital art required in multimedia.

Would you recommend it to a future student? Why?

Many multimedia majors have the same degree and minor, and I would recommend it to very creative minds who can take on all these forms of media at once, especially senior year when all you have are art and multimedia classes.

Are there any particular experiences with your minor that helped you prepare for graduation?

Towards the end of my college career, the biggest challenge is making sure you are covering all the required credits in every division. It took an hour with my success counselor and my professors to fill out all the substitutions to make sure I satisfied all the requirements.
