Rudy Perez ’24

I fell in love with creating music no one has ever heard. And if you are able to make something tailored to a person, they can make your music even better! I’ve been producing music since I was a senior in high school, and I loved tinkering with audio plugins and learning about computers. I highly encourage students with a music major and composition emphasis to double major in music production. Nowadays, a single composer often does the job of multiple people. In doing both of these majors, I found they often overlapped.

Major: Music and Music Production

Why did you choose your majors?

Music composition is something I just took up during the pandemic, I fell in love with creating music no one has ever heard. There is something beautiful about wiring music for a certain player. Being able to make something tailored to a person, they can make your music even better! Music production was something I added my sophomore year, I’ve been producing music since I was a senior in high school. I was terrible but it was so fun to work with DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) I loved tinkering with audio plugins and learning about computers.

Would you recommend them to a future student? Why?

I highly encourage students in the composition program to double major in music production. Now a days a single composer often does the job of multiple people. I found that by doing both of these majors they often overlapped. Concepts I learned in my composition classes translated so well into my studio recording classes. So much so that for one of our finals I was helping with the recording equipment to record my fellow composers works.

What are your future plans?

I plan on going to Grad School. I will be applying to USCs Music Industry Master program and NYUs Music Business Master program. I also plan on becoming a music supervisor, having both skills of composition but also production with the hint of business have prepared me well. Along side the music program on campus has given me multiple internship opportunities which I took.

Are there any particular experiences — in or out of the classroom — that have helped you identify that path?

During spring of 2023 multiple internship opportunities were presented to me. I interned at regime music group in Agoura Hills. I was able to see multiple side of the music industry. I saw A&R, Management, Record Label management, and music supervision. This internship made me realize my career path of music supervision and I have found a great mentor because of it.

I also got a job with the Los Angeles Philharmonic as their Residential Life Manager for the YOLA National Festival. These are opportunities I could’ve only gotten through Cal Lu and the music program here. I thank all my professors especially Dr. Spraggins (Chair of the music Department). SSS has been a great help as well.
