Minor: Public Health
Why did you choose your major?
I chose my Sociology Major because I knew it would help me understand the population I hope to work with one day, that is children. I wish to become an academic counselor one day and I knew Sociology would help me understand different populations better, which it did due to the few research papers I had to write. I knew I also wanted to get an insight into what makes up society and Sociology did just that. It helped me with seeing what factors are important for people in society, some of these factors that I know students will lack more of than others (Such as money). My sociology courses have also helped me understand the different roles people are expected to follow because of what society has set. This will help me in understanding potential conflicts that may arise with students on identity problems they might face.
I chose my Spanish Major after I spoke to Dr.Fiore. It wasn’t in my plans but after I saw how it was flexible to be added to my four-year plan I decided to do it. I also knew it would give me more perspective than others when it came to Graduate School Applications. I wanted to stand out and what better than to major in my first language? However, it became super interesting when I was able to merge both majors in my Spanish Capstone.
Would you recommend it to a future student? Why?
I would totally recommend both majors. Sociology is something you can apply to pretty much anything and a lot of jobs you wish to follow. The courses are super interesting and vary from Sport Sociology and Medical Sociology. It will help broaden your understanding of society and how it has changed throughout the years. It will also help you understand why people’s behaviors and attitudes are changing.
What are your future plans?
Attending Graduate School to further my studies in Sociology and Spanish
Are there any particular experiences — in or out of the classroom — that have helped you identify that path?
Spanish has the most caring professors who really get to know you on a deeper level. I have had several who never hesitate to help with what I need. They also structure really interesting courses that are about different subjects as well. Just like Sociology, you can apply a Spanish Major to any other major by studying areas in Latin America that you focus on in your other courses for your other major.
